Tutor
Many students in our schools are struggling, but with increasing class sizes and decreasing budgets they are not receiving the help they need. The purpose of the SSIA Tutoring Program is to provide individualized instructional assistance to those students who are not meeting grade level standards. Our goals are twofold; to help close the achievement gap by helping low-performing students, and to provide support and assistance to classroom teachers. Through our Tutoring program we have also enjoyed forging new community relationships and strengthening existing ones. Our community tutors range from students to retired seniors to employees in local businesses.
Since the program was implemented in 2005, SSIA’s Community Tutoring Program has placed over 100 tutors who have collectively worked with several hundred students, at least 60% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunch (FRL).
In March 2008 we launched our paid Math Tutor Program. Six tutors have completed training led by district certified math coaches. These tutors work in four schools, together they provide 25 hours of weekly math tutoring.
