Debate

Students participate in SSIA debate program.
"We feel extremely fortunate to have this program available - so amazing! My daughter gained confidence, an expanded awareness of (the) topic, and also respect for other people's opinions and how to communicate more effectively."

Spring 2010 Debate Club registration is now closed. For more information see Debate Club 9-10 FAQs.

Classes started the week of February 22nd, and will meet once a week for 12 weeks through May 21, culminating in a cross-school tournament between Blaine, Lawton, John Hay and Coe schools.

One of our most innovative programs, Debate is offered to fourth and fifth grade students at our four elementary schools. The first debate club offered to elementary age students in the country, each 12-week session focuses on an age-appropriate and relevant topic such as whether public school students should be required to wear school uniforms. Students learn the structure of debate, practice public speaking skills, research and gather evidence, and practice debating with peers. At the completion of each session, students participate in an exciting cross-school tournament in which the whole community participates; judging, scoring, and cheering on the debate teams!
