Our 12th Elementary Debate Tournament!

More than 40 enthusiastic 4th and 5th grade debaters participated in the 12th SSIA Debate Tournament, held on Saturday, January 16 at John Hay.

The topic, "Seattle Public Schools Should Require Students to Wear Uniforms" generated lots of spirited - and well-researched - back and forth, as 19 teams competed for 8 top spots.

This year brought positive change to the Debate Program, as our own Ms. Munro (Coe), Mr. Reddy (Lawton) and Ms. Alberts (Blaine) coached the teams at their respective schools. Mr. Lincoln, a district substitute teacher, coached the John Hay team.

Positive feedback from parents and debaters included:

"My daughter loved debate from the first class!"

"The program really pushed student thinking."

"I learned keeping organized is really important."

"Debate is more effective than arguing."

In addition to all the hard work of the students and their coaches, 19 community and parent volunteers were on hand to judge the sessions, help with snacks, and generally keep things moving along smoothly.

We'd like to thank Tully's Coffee and Noah's Bagels for our refreshments; Sam Kuntz who took lots of wonderful photographs; and our Program Manager, Sandy Nielsen for making it all happen.

Special thanks to you, our SSIA community, for your ongoing support and contributions, which make programs like Debate possible.
