Another Successful School Year!

Successful Schools in Action had a great year, with improvements and growth in EVERY program. Here are just a few highlights:
TUTORING
Our Community Tutor Program placed more tutors, who worked more hours and served more students than ever before. We also added a Math Tutor component, enabling us to begin meeting an increasing demand for well-trained math tutors. Six tutors completed district-led training; collectively they provided 25 hours of math tutoring each week.
DEBATE
Our ever-popular debate program expanded to McClure Middle School this year. We
created a curriculum, beefed up coaches training, and added some fun improvements to the classes.
WORK EXPERIENCE
A new program this year, Work Experience offered experiential learning in the community to McClure and SBOC students. Visits to Google and Victory Studios, and working at businesses like Blue Highway Games, Video Isle, Hill Top Yarn and Queen Anne Dispatch, were all part of this innovative program. Students gained self-confidence, learned new skills, and formed lasting relationships with local business owners.
COLLABORATIVE CONVERSATIONS
Teachers, specialists, and parents all participated in these meetings designed to offer opportunities for different schools to work together. SSIA held seven Conversations this year: elementary teachers from all four cluster schools, 5th and 6th grade math teachers, PE, Art, and Music teachers, Librarians, and parent group officers and members. Ideas for collaborative events, joint fundraising, resource sharing, and future focus groups abounded; we'll be following up on many of these next year.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the hard work and support of so many people. So a HUGE THANK YOU to the following: our incredible Program Managers Flo and Mary, the SSIA Board of Directors, a dedicated group of tutors, our wonderful volunteers, the Queen Anne and Magnolia businesses who hosted students, sponsored SSIA events, and showed their support in innumerable ways, the donors who make this all possible, and each of our seven partner schools who contributed resources, financial and program support, and endless energy. It does indeed take a village.
Have a great summer everyone!
